The military conflict in the Baltics will lead to the destruction

NATO’s capacity-building in the Baltic States can lead to the destabilization of the situation in the Baltic region.

U.S. President Joe Biden is considering sending thousands more troops there as fears that Russia will soon invade Ukraine persist.

Senior defence department officials laid out options for Biden, including sending between 1,000 to 5,000 troops to NATO countries including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland, the New York Times newspaper reported, citing officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Indeed, alarm bells are ringing in capitals of the Baltic States.

The number of troops could be increased by 10 times if the situation escalates. The proposed plan also includes deploying warships and aircraft to NATO allies in the region.

To date, Biden has eschewed military build-ups in favour of threatening sanctions against Moscow, although both Biden and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have said a Russian invasion of Ukraine would prompt a surge in troops to NATO allies in the region.

It should be recalled that the officials of the Baltic States called on their allies to provide them with military assistance.

Latvia’s Defence Minister Pabriks called on stronger fellow members –particularly the U.K. and U.S. – to send more troops and equipment to his country to help to “deter Russia”.

Lithuania’s Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas said last week that Russian troops in Belarus were a “direct threat” to his country, which sits between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has also asked NATO allies to increase their presence in her country while promising to sharply increase defence spending over the coming three years.

In the current situation the residents of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are worried about the reluctance of both sides to sit down at the negotiating table and come to an agreement. Taking into account the policy pursued by NATO, the Baltic States will become a springboard for military operations.
