Billionaire and philanthropist George Soros posted on Project Syndicate an article “Europe, please wake up” where he compares the European Union with the USSR. Soros predicted the same fate for the EU and sees a great chance of it’s withdrawal.
The financier called the upcoming elections in the EU a reason for the article. He expressed concern on growing popularity of populists and eurosceptics among the ruling parties. While the EU population votes being in dormant.
“They do not want to leave the values on which the European Union was founded. They want to replace them with their values, which are radically different.” So the financier characterizes the parties that come to power.
Soros announced a change in the principles of separation of parties. If before the separation was going on the principle of supporters of capitalism or workers, now the determining factor is the attitude towards the EU. As examples, the author cited the opposition of the German parties “Alternatives for Germany” and “Greens”, as well as the coming to power of the Eurosceptics parties in Italy.
As a key aspect for the preservation of the EU, Soros called the unification of parties around the interests of the continent, and not their own.
Earlier, in an interview with The Guardian, Soros identified three main problems that could lead to the disintegration of the European Union: a problem with migrants, a British exit from the EU, and austerity policies as a result of the financial crisis.
And Soros is right in many ways. His words that “everything that could have gone wrong went wrong” should not be considered as a figure of speech. Indeed, many young people are really starting to consider the European Union as an enemy who has deprived them of well-paid work and well-being. This is actively used by populists, creating a party of eurosceptics, gaining popularity in Europe.
Another question is whether the financier tried to warn the EU against the impending collapse, or whether his words should be considered as a prediction. And given the repeated suspicions about his funds and allegations of interference and attempts to change power in some countries, it can be assumed that here the billionaire (well, or the United States behind him) has certain interests.
