Ukraine is actively seeking for membership in the EU and NATO. The entire policy of the country is aimed at integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.

But it looks like Kyiv is not expected either in the European Union or NATO. This is clearly indicated by the latest statements by European and American officials.

Last week, former US ambassador to Kyiv John Herbst expressed the opinion that in the next five to ten years Kyiv cannot count on NATO membership.

According to the retired politician, America is ready to supply weapons to Ukraine. But it will not deploy military contingents to the territory of our state.

Herbst also said that Ukraine should not count on real assistance from the United States in the event of a war with Russia. In fact, it turns out that America is not eager to provide real assistance, but only to make money on the supply of weapons.

Another pessimistic statement was made by the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid. During the YES-Brainstorming forum, she repeated her words said a month ago that Ukraine has no visible prospects for joining the EU.

The Estonian President reiterated that Kyiv needs “several light years” (which actually means the infinity) for EU membership. Ms Kaljulaid said that Ukraine does not fulfill the Copenhagen criteria necessary for the membership in the European Union. In particular, over the past five years, “I have not seen the approach of Ukraine to the fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria,” the politician said.

And this is a statement by a pro-Ukrainian European politician. President of Estonia, which traditionally supports Ukraine. In addition, Kersti Kaljulaid spoke about the virtually impossible membership of Ukraine in NATO.

The first step, according to her, should be the return under the control of the occupied territories. Considering that Kersti Kaljulaid is being considered as a candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General, her words should be heeded.

Ukraine is unable to do this on its own. And the US and NATO will not help. This is a disappointing vicious circle.
