A certain degree of egoism and grandeur has always been inherent in Americans. With the advent of Donald Trump, a similar trend now prevails at the state level.
The “America ahead of all” policy pursued by Donald Trump implies a struggle for leadership in all areas. Fighting China and Russia as serious competitors in the world, with other states for regional trade markets and resources. And in some strange way, Germany was among the opponents of the United States. In the course of all the recent summits to Berlin, very serious reproaches were heard from the American leadership.
As a result, the number of Germans negatively assessing relations with Washington reached 73%. These statistics, cited by the Kerber Foundation (Germany), were published by the leading German edition Deutsche Welle.
Increasingly, articles criticizing Donald Trump’s policies are beginning to appear on the pages of German media.
After the canceled visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Germany scheduled for May 7, German journalist Daniel Bressler on the pages of the Suddeutsche Zeitung described the actions of American diplomats as “impolite and shameless.” Not ashamed of his words, the journalist wrote that “one way or another, more than two years after Donald Trump took office, much of what was recently presented as German-American friendship has been smashed to smithereens.” Political analyst Alexander Rahr on the air of NSN hastened to announce an unprecedented deterioration in bilateral relations since the Second World War.
In fact, political scientists dramatize the situation a bit. Everyone knows that the American leader prefers to resort to coarse power politics, rather than to the means of “smart diplomacy” in promoting American interests. He fights against opponents. And such are his methods. Trump opposes the participation of Chinese Huawei 5G technology development, wages a trade war with China, and Germany is involved in the conflict. He is trying to conquer the European energy market and imposes sanctions against Russia, and this step again touches the interests of Germany. He started another arms race and demands from partners to increase contributions to NATO. And here again Germany opposes.
It happened so that recently the economic and political interests of the United States and Germany diverge. But this does not mean that they become enemies. In a way, rivals – yes, but not opponents. However, the further development of relations in a similar way may lead to the formation by Germany of an alliance to counter the United States, which some political scientists are already beginning to call for.
