New Danish circumstances in favor of Gazprom

Denmark suspended gas production in the largest field of Tyra. This was reported with reference to the Ministry of Energy of the country by Danmarks Radio.

Currently, the field provides 90% of the kingdom’s gas needs. The total reserves of the Tyra field are estimated at 35 billion cubic meters. Daily production is about seven million cubic meters.

Experts call the subsidence of the seabed as the reasons for stopping work at the field. Morten Hesselager Pedersen, a representative for Total, said that this makes the distance between the surface of the water and drilling platforms too small – only 15 meters, and this is contrary to safety precautions.

To solve the problem, a complete dismantling and installation of newly producing platforms is necessary. This will require a little over three million dollars and about three years. Thus, gas production will resume no earlier than the summer of 2022.

Therefore, Denmark will temporarily be forced to purchase gas from Germany, as the Danish gas transmission system is integrated with the German one. In fact, it will be Russian gas, since Germany itself receives it through the Nord Stream.

And since January 2020, the country runs the risk of running into gas shortages. Well, or with its sharp rise in price. Because if the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 is not completed, the situation on the European gas market will escalate and there is hardly any free gas left. In this case, Germany can always declare that it does not have sufficient reserves of blue fuel for resale due to the delay in commissioning of Nord Stream 2.

Now Copenhagen is faced with a choice: to show integrity in the issue of issuing permits for laying a Russian gas pipeline through its territory, or to face a gas shortage.
Meanwhile, the head of the Russian Ministry of Energy, Alexander Novak, said he expectes a positive decision from the Danish authorities in the nearest future. According to him, 81% of the gas pipeline has already been built, and the laying of the Danish section will take about a month and a half.

Experts believe that new circumstances should accelerate Denmark’s issuance of building permits. But the final decision, of course, will remain with Copenhagen.
