Two weeks ago, Valentin Bezruky, the head of the Research Center for Independent Consumer Expertise Research „Test”, spoke on ObozTV.
He said that Ukraine is considering the issue of lifting the ban on the sale of expired products. The expert expressed confidence that such a initiative would be in demand among the country’s population.
As an example, V.Bezruky cited one of the supermarket chains in Germany, where expired products are officially sold. However, it is worth noting that in Germany it is the only chain of stores selling expired products.
It is understood that in case of adopting a similar idea in Ukraine, the consumer itself will be responsible for possible damage to health in the event of poisoning with purchased products.
On the one hand, the expert is right. After all, most products do not spoil immediately after the expiration date indicated on the package. With cereal or pasta, for example, nothing will happen if the proper storage conditions are provided. The only exceptions are dairy products. But on the other hand, on the shelves of Ukrainian shops and now you can find a lot of spoiled products. There are frequent cases when the suppliers themselves indicate an incorrect expiration date, or the supermarket presidents re-paste the labels with the shelf life of the products.
So the proposed initiative is quite twofold. On the one hand, it could help poor people. On the other hand, it will legitimize the shadow schemes of suppliers to extend the shelf life of products.
